So I guess this is happening on some type of generational ship or something? I've read plenty of scifi in which some real-time gene altering tech exists (usually meant to alter humans or livestock to endure alien climates) and the maintenance crew ends up fucking around with it, creating extra octopuses with which they can play chess with... Anyway I believe stuff like in this video would happen as well.
